That’s why so many managers steal $$$ from the artists 🙂
Agree its a nightmare job but I could see the fun of managing an young artist/band and see them build an audience. That must be exciting.
Peter Criss right when he was out of Kiss: he needed new management and needed to break from Aucoin/Kiss management. He would’ve taken a financial hit up front, but if he would’ve gotten new management and got great people around him, and re emerged as a solo artist without even mentioning that he was in Kiss, he could’ve had a successful solo career. He could’ve done what Phil Collins did except he could’ve let the public figure out he was in Kiss. I would’ve put him in rehab, gotten Bob Ezrin to produce his record, and then see what happens. He never had a chance staying with Aucoin and that circle he was in.
I love Kiss and I love Peter’s voice. The music, regardless of how great his voice is, just wasn’t there. He had a handful of great songs that he sang with Kiss. But the majority of his solo songs after Kiss were very dull, boring and with 8th grade level lyrics.
If you would’ve been his manager, would you have insisted that he doesn’t write any songs and that all songs and lyrics are provided to him? Would you have determined who played with him? I think those are the only ways that maybe, just maybe, he may have had a better solo career.
Would Peter have agreed to all of this even if he was 100% clean and sober? I doubt it. Why? Something HUGE (and I’m not talkin’ bout my Love Gun wooooowwwww!!) that all of the original guys in Kiss have: EGO!
Real Paul Stanley, I would hire Bob Ezrin to produce his first solo record out of the band. Ezrin would be the music director, and the one working on the song selections, arrangements, Or maybe someone like Nile Rodgers to get Peter to make a modern, R&B, rock record. I am starting to like NIle as my producer there. We get Peter singing and co writing cool songs w/Nile, get Peter in a Miami Vice type suit with greying hair, and beard, just a sophisticated look. We shoot videos w/Peter in exotic locations, singing songs while cruising in a speed boat reflecting on society’s grand schemes in that soulful, yet up to date and modern, Peter Criss voice. Peter gets a hit song, and then two: people wonder “was this guy really in Kiss?” we’re not playing that up and in fact want to seem to be nullifying Kiss from his current music. That’s the strategy that I think would have worked.
Some of Peter’s solo work was good even tho it would be considered yacht rock by today’s standards.
In addition to all this addiction, Peter’s skill level dropped off a cliff – not sure if it was due to age, drugs, his many accidents or a combo of them – but during the reunion tour – Peter struggle to play.
At the time, if he were clean and had better management – Peter could have had a “successful” solo career.
@I’m Emotional – I think you have a very smart strategy! It just may have worked.
The Bangles! Why? Susanna Hoffs! Yummmmmm! Music sucks, but who cares! lol
Wrecked: everyone has their own views, surely (I won’t call you Shirley), but The Bangles get a bad rep for no reason. They’re an album band, no bum songs. Each member writes and sings lead. The whole Walk Like an Egyptian thing, it’s not them. They are like a female Beatles.
I don’t know what kind of rep they had/have. I probably have only listened to a handful of songs from them, so for all I know you could be right. But the songs I’ve heard outside of Walk like an Egyptian, I didn’t like either. I am mostly a metalhead and their type of music does nothing for me. Don’t care much for The Beatles either, so that’s not going to sell me on The Bangles. But to be able to manage one of the hottest chicks to ever grace the planet? Sign me up! I’ll fake it so they won’t think I suck lol
I am team Go-Gos myself (their debut still stands up) but Hoffs is definitely a babe (who needs to lay off the scalpel).
As I always write, to each their own, but I am definitely team The Go-Gos. I never liked The Bangles, even if they were supposedly, better musicians. I thought The Go-Gos had far catchier songs and that Belinda Carlisle was adorable.
Even though I had dirty blonde hair as a child, I always had blonde envy. Back in the 80s, I thought the two Heathers, Locklear and Thomas, were/are gorgeous.
A two decades later, and some gray hair, I returned to my childhood “roots,” and became a blonde.
I would manage Canadian rock band Sloan. I’ve seen them 8 times, always great. All four guys have been together since their inception in 1991. All four write, sing lead and switch instruments on stage. They are normal guys, music magpies like I am. They are considered to be the Canadian Beatles. I’m a huge Beatles nut. I’ve hung out with them enough to know they are professional to a T. So, it’d be a pleasure to manage them. Why? They are pros and I love love love their music.
Money city maniacs ! My favorite Sloan song! Great to find another fan! I would manage UFO because I could jump behind the kit at sound check and play with Michael & pete ! Two of the all time greats!

I would not want to manage any band! That sounds like a nightmare job.
