QUESTION OF THE WEEK, FROM POSTER DOUG R., WHO DO YOU THINK ARE THE MOST UNDER APPRECIATED BANDS/MUSICIANS?

Not surprise, number one is JOHN SYKES/Blue Murder.

Also, Tora Tora and Richie Kozten. If I think of anyone else, I will add them to my list.

  1. I will say Nuno Bettencourt. Yes, he is loved by other musicians, and has been everywhere lately, but whenever i see a list of best guitarist he is nowhere to be found.

For newer bans gonna go with Rival Sons – Jay Buchanan is the best vocalist I’ve heard in the past 20 or so years.

Everyone else is saying King’s X, and I agree…gonna go out on a limb and say Salty Dog. If you never heard of them, they should have been HUGE, their debut album from 1990 is sleazy bar type rock with an amazing singer and an awesome drum sound…one of my favorites to this day.

Law and Order – a local band in the NY area from late 80’s / early 90’s, had 2 releases. Love them as well, both amazing albums, hair metal but with an edge, great singer and musicians. if they came out a few years earlier they would have been huge. PLEASE tell me someone remembers them!!

    1. Hi Michael,

I am torn as the whether Bettencourt is truly under appreciated.

He did tour with Rhianna quite a few times, and may still be in her touring band, so that did give him mainstream exposure. Also, he has played on quite a few award shows, with lots of eyes watching.

Compared to John Sykes, I would Bettencourt is far more well known.

Very few guitar players reach the status of being household names, such as Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards, etc. Even Randy Rhoads is slightly less recognized compared to those previously mentioned.

I would say Bettencourt is on the same level as Zakk Wylde.

    2. Excellent call out on Rival Sons! Not sure how I left them off my list! Thank you.

  2. I liked Tall Stories – their debut was excellent. You can listen to on You Tube.
Lead Singer Steve Augeri was one of the singers for Journey after Perry left

  3. Living Color comes to mind. While they were mainstream and had a few hits, I’ve always thought they would be bigger. Being that Vernon Reid is such a virtuoso, William Calhoun a great drummer and Cory Glover having such a great voice and presence.

  4. Can next weeks question be Name All the Bands-Musicians that are Overrated. I’m sure Rattlehead has one in mind…..starts with Meh. ;oj I know I have a few.

Cheers to ya’ Dana for the increased interaction.

    1. Tasker, i was thinking Dana could pose the exact same question. I, too, don’t understand why it would be “controversial” since it would just be us fans expressing our opinions….which mean nothing except to ourselves. Perhaps the issue is more that Eddie Trunk’s site would be soliciting the question and bands/members that he has personal and professional relationships with may be offended/upset by being mentioned. I get it, if that’s the case….We are here to have a forum for our opinions, this isn’t our career.

And you’re right Meh- would make my “overrated” list….as would G n -, and Anthra-, with G n – being my #1. But what do I know? Meh- and G n – both have sold millions of albums, continue to sell out stadiums/arenas around the world, and they are in the RRHOF….well, based on their inductions, I know more than the RRHOF. :o)

    2. Wow, that was going to be my follow-up Question Of The Week – Most Overrated! Lol! My top 2 – Queensryche (hate them) and Pearl Jam, ugh!

    3. I’m with you on Anthrax being overrated and Gn’R for everything after Spaghetti Incident. One and only time I saw GnR was the Metallica-GnR tour that started in DC both were awesome. I think Dokken is overrated.

    4. I think Dokken is overrated.

      Tasker,

Of course, as I always “say” to each their own, but I could not disagree more with that opinion. You may feel the quality of the material is lackluster, but the musicians have unending talent.

Lynch is a BEAST of a guitarist. He resides in my top three favorites, and Rhoads, who is my number one, had Lynch replace him at Musonia when he went on the road to tour with Ozzy.

Additionally, that band has some of the best vocal harmonizations, in hard rock and metal. Watch their One Live Night acoustic performance.

As a matter of fact, I will tag some of the performances here:

Tooth and Nail (Mick Brown Singing)
Just Got Lucky (Live) Jeff Pilson Singing
      Covering The Beatles Nowhere Man

    5. Tasker, I agree that, as a band, Dokken is overrated. But individually, they are all very talented musicians (except for Don Dokken), especially George Lynch. IMO, Dokken’s success is due to the musicians in the band who were talented enough to overcome Don Dokken’s weak voice.

    6. Thanks for those links, I’ll check them out. Like you I grew up during the 80’s as a teenager and loved the metal scene. George Lynch is a super talented guitarist and the band with Pilson & Mick Brown are solid pro’s no doubt. I was 15 & 16 when I watched from the rail Dokken play at two MOR shows Summer of ’88. They were really cool even if George’s guitar tech was causing him volume issues at both shows. They jammed Mr. Scary and I was blown away.

For me during that era they were way overplayed on the radio & MTv. While the Freddie Kreuger videos and others (helicopter) were cool. I just got turned off and Don Dokken as the years went on.

For what it’s worth, Randy’s my absolute favourite guitarist since I was 15 , as is Eddie VH, Daviid Gilmour, Joe Walsh, Satriani to name a few.

Love yer passion for Dokken and other bands. \m/
