QUESTION OF THE WEEK-COURTESY OF POSTER DOUG. R: WHAT’S YOUR fAVORITE FORMAT FOR MUSIC? CD, VINYL, CASSETTE, 8-TRACK, STREAMING?

Since I grew up on vinyl, I tend to prefer it, to all others formats.

However, I have not used a turntable in forever, so the format I use most is CD’s. I have some of the CD’s uploaded in my iTunes library, which I listen to on my laptop, as well. If it is not in my library, I will listen to the song on Youtube.

  1. Even though I don’t listen to vinyl anymore, it is my favorite format. Buying a new album, opening it up, sniffing the inside of the album cover, putting the vinyl on the turntable, listening to it while reading the jacket notes/song lyrics, and studying the album cover was an awesome experience. Both sides A and B had just the perfect amount of space for the perfect amount of music, maybe about 9 or 10 songs.

CDs are great for downloading to ITunes and making music “portable”, but there is no “experience” anymore, at least not for me, cuz of its small size. Also, there is alot of disc space for music, and artists often put 14 or 15 songs on a CD. I think sometimes that much music can bore the listener….and least it bores me, sometimes.

I think cassettes suck, while 8 tracks suck even more….

  2. Tape, and cassettes, actually have the best fidelity of all the formats. High quality analog cassette is the best way to hear it….it just has a downside as not withstanding a lot of plays…they wear out pretty quickly….rattling of the cassette, warbling, its sudden entry into your player…so, vinyl is the next best choice, and then CDs. Vinyl captures all of ambience in the recording, better than the CD does, at least to me…analog is punchier, and captures my attention better.

  3. The only thing I never liked about CD’s was opening them up! Peeling off all the sticky sh-t was/is a pain in the ass! With vinyl records all you had to do was tear off the plastic which took no time and you were good to go! Yea I agree with brother Rattle, albums were exciting to open, bigger photos, smaller price, again I love the simplicity of CD’s, but with vinyl you weren’t/aren’t just listening to music, you were/are submerged in it! Those of us who grew up in the ’70s/’80s understand.

  4. Rattlehead perfectly summed up my feelings on vinyl. There was nothing like it. Holding that jacket was part of the ‘art’ you were enjoying. Similar feeling to opening my very first three packs of baseball cards ! I purchased more cassettes than 8 track tapes…….for car use. CD’s…….I have plenty and still use them. But most of my music today is streamed. I’m old enough to not look too far into the future, knowing we have to enjoy TODAY and continue to listen and enjoy……no matter the format. (Going to see Styx/Cheap Trick……because why not !!)

  5. If I knew vinyl was going to make a comeback, I would have kept my record collection and invested in the latest in turntable technology.
Loved opening a record and seeing the inside, with the artwork or the booklet they provided.
Used to love hearing Elton John’s Rock of the Westies side 1 (with headphones) – so good all the little studio things they put in
I have kept a few records that maybe collectors’ items one day.
But I hate the crackle and skipping that plagued a lot of my records – probably the crappy needle and turntable I had.

So its either CD/Streaming for me.
