KISS FRONTMAN PAUL STANLEY ON ORIGINAL GUITARIST ACE FREHLEY, “WE MISS HIM, AND I HOPE HE LIVED THE KIND OF LIFE HE WANTED TO”

After the completion of his Cooking With Paul Stanley seminar at KISS Kruise: Landlocked In Vegas, Stanley took part in an impromptu question-and-answer session with audience members, some select responses appear below (as transcribed by blabbermouth.net).

On late KISS guitarist Ace Frehley:

Stanley: “It’s no secret — we had lots of differences with Ace, lots of differences with [original KISS drummer] Peter [Criss]. But that’s family. This whole KISS monument was built with a foundation of those guys. We couldn’t have started it without them, and we couldn’t continue it with them, but it doesn’t change [their contributions]. [Ace] was so thrilled with the idea of going to the Kennedy Center… We miss him, and I hope he lived the kind of life he wanted to. He was one of a kind and he was wild, and he did say if his life ended tomorrow, he’d have no regrets because he lived the kind of life he wanted to. That’s all we can expect from any of us — when it’s over, hopefully we’ve had the kinds of lives that we wanted. That’s what I wish for all of you — just don’t go too soon.”

On why KISS shies away from performing “deep cuts…”:

Stanley: “Let’s talk about deep cuts for a minute. Deep cuts appeal to two people… I once went to see a very, very big band, and what they were advertising for this particular show was [that] they were going to play all deep cuts. It was the most boring f–king thing I’d ever seen in my life. Honestly, the reason cuts are deep is because they’re not popular, and they’re not as good. Do we take out Detroit Rock City? Do we take out Love Gun? Do we take out God Of Thunder to play some [lesser-known] song? I don’t think you’ll be disappointed…but if you’re expecting deep cuts, I’ll see you next time.”

On whether fans can expect additional KISS “kruises” in the future:

Stanley: “We’re doing our best to get a ship for next year.”

KISS Kruise: Landlocked In Vegas is taking place November 14th-16th at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.

  1. Ace wasn’t in Kiss by his own choice. Gene sang Vinnie the guitar solo to Saint and Sinner on the demo. The Kiss box sets are all on their youtube channel. I am glad they are writing new material.

    1. Dana, this page has introduced me to lots of music/bands I never listened to previously……..many old, some new.

    2. Silas, I agree with you about learning a lot about bands. Dana has turned me on to a few, Tora Tora being my favorite that she recommended to me.

  2. Stanley trashed Ace pretty much every time a microphone was put in front of his face , it seems self serving and disingenuous for him to now say ” we had differences, we miss him blah ,blah blah,” I wish the guy could just have a real moment of sorrow•

  3. In Paul’s defense, if he now started going around saying how much he loved Ace, what a great guy he was, and what a mega-talent we’ve lost, people’s first comment would be, “Oh, bulls**t! Where were all these accolades from you when the guy was alive?”

I think Paul is aware of that and is tempering his comments/compliments with the admission that they had their differences.

    1. I understand what your saying. , But stanley put himself in this cant win situation with his nearly constant bad mouthing of Ace and Peter, he wanted to sell kiss and dismiss the 2 guys that helped make kiss great, and I just never understood why ? These guys were clean and sober ACE for decades – this is just my perspective, life is too short to spend any of it trashing people you were once close to you should be making amends pulling people close apologize if need be – now Ace is gone hopefully stanley & Simmons have reached out to Peter and I hope they can put the bad feelings and differences to bed ~

  4. Too bad they couldn’t do a few songs, if not a show with all 4 original members. It seems as if they tried but Ace was asking a little more than what Gene and Paul were offering. Now it will never happen. Sad for Kiss fans
