Assembling an essential package, Hugh Syme notably designed brand new slipcase art for Vol. 1. Now, Dream Theater presents these albums in one comprehensive set.  Plus, it paves the way for the release of box sets for Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 in 2025.

Vol. 1 traces Dream Theater’s trajectory throughout the nineties, highlighting the natural evolution of their signature sound in the span of an important decade and their uncanny interplay. Among many accolades, Images And Words [1992] not only reached gold status, but it also claimed a spot on Rolling Stone’s coveted “100 Greatest Metal Albums of All-Time. Not to mention, it housed signature staples such as Pull Me Under, Another Day, and Metropolis – Part 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper. Meanwhile, Guitar World placed Awake [1994] at #1 on its “Superunknown: 50 Iconic Albums That Defined 1994. They maintained the momentum of this creative run with Falling Into Infinity [1997]. Finally, Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory [1999] has cemented a surefire legacy of its own. In a Rolling Stone poll, audiences overwhelmingly cast votes in favor of Metropolis Pt. 2 as the “Number One All-Time Progressive Rock Album.” Classic Rock chose it as the “15th Greatest Concept Album. The band celebrated its 20th anniversary by playing the record in its entirety on a sold-out 2019 tour.

  1. My favorite Dream Theater song is As I Am. That riff is so damn powerful! Some of their stuff I dig but there’s also an equal amount of stuff that I don’t care for. Regardless they are a great band of musicians.

    1. RPS, that’s a great song! Did you know that song was written about Dream Theater’s early 2000’s tour with Queensryche, where a Queensryche guitarist was trying to give guitar playing tips to John Petrucci? And that whole album, Train of Thought, is awesome. It’s DT’s heaviest album and it’s the only “heavy metal” album the band ever made.

A Change of Seasons is my favorite DT song……a 20 minute epic on the cycle of life and the death of Mike Portnoy’s mom.

  2. Portnoy must be in at least 7 bands at all times. I guess he left the Winery Dogs, or is just taking a break from them. They seem somewhat energized since Mike’s return.

  3. I remember when Mike left Dream Theater and joined some band called Adrenaline Mob. I thought oh man this is going to be huge, the next great thing! Little did I realize 15 bands later that most of the bands he’s been in did little for me musically. The main one that many people seemed to like are The Winery Dogs. I like some of their stuff but not all of it.
