QUESTION OF THE WEEK: A PERSON WHO WAS NEVER INTO, NOR EXPOSED TO HARD ROCK/HEAVY METAL, AND ONLY WANTS TO SPEND MONEY ON ONE INTRODUCTORY ALBUM TO THE GENRE,  WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THEY BUY?

So, since I want to illicit a positive experience, in order to entice this person to seek out further material from this band, as well as, others,  I would most likely recommend, something that is quite melodic, with a bit of bite.

I realize this is a difficult question, but here is my suggestion (as of posting this):

  1. Good question – one possibility not mentioned in the rules is to select a greatest hits album like Foreigner, Heart, Cheap Trick.

That said – any of these four studio albums would be my pick :

Boston’s debut – if not rock – definitely a gateway drug to hard rock
Led Zeps debut – hard rock mixed with some blues and acoustics
Bad Company’s debut – same as Led Zep above
The Cars debut – might be considered more alternative / new wave

And lastly, Dana mentioned hard rock being a step up from the Beatles…. Gene and Paul considered Kiss, at least at one point, to be heavy metal Beatles – if that is the case, I would pick their Greatest Kiss (Hits)

    1. Gene.

That Ratt collection I picked, is a greatest hits package :). Regardless of the question, I cannot recommend it highly enough. I love it, and listen to it, all the time.

  2. Dare I say Twisted Sister “Stay Hungry”? When i was a kid i was always top 40 but once i heard Were Not Gonna Take It i leaned more towards rock…it was my first foray into rock and metal…I think it is mainstream enough to hook some newbies…

I can also say Metallica Ride The Lightning…may be too heavy for newcomers to the genre but for me that was my first (and for a long time ONLY) thrash album I had, even before i was listening to more heavy stuff I loved that album. Plus, Fade to Black may hook in some newbies…

  3. Excellent question. AC/DC Let There Be Rock. Raw, gritty, and they literally blew up their amps while recording the title track. Loud and proud and excellent, hook laden songs.
