Billboard is premiering the video for the Winery Dogs’ Time Machine. Watch it below.

“Lyrically, Time Machine explores the curse of vices and the desire to look into the past to discover the origin of these vices with the ultimate goal of a cure,” singer/guitarist Richie Kotzen said. “Believing in the notion that many of our bad habits are rooted in past life events.”

The Winery Dogs are a rock trio that consists of Kotzen (Poison, Mr. Big), bassist Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big) and drummer Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater). Time Machine is the new single off the band’s self-titled debut album, which was released in July on Loud & Proud Records and peaked at Number 27 on the Billboard 200.

They spent money on a video on an album that is pretty much done in sales?

Sounds alot like an Alice in Chains song….

I think that’s why this one is probably my favorite song on the album. I think they’re decent, but not blowing me away or anything. Sounds a lot like Mr. Big to me. Talented bunch of guys, I guess I was hoping for or expecting something a little bit different, edgier. Most of the album is a little too “happy” for me.

It’s hard to know what to say about music like this. It sounds very, very safe. Nobody’s taking a chance here on anything. It’s as if a producer hired these guys and told them what was needed to have a real rock sounding record. We are hearing the results of rock playing being institutionalized – everybody going to school and learning the same scales, licks, patterns etc… and zero personality (unless you count ego) and zero individuality.

It’s so funny how every rock musician bought into the GIT and Shrapnel philosophy hook, line and sinker. They swallowed the hook completely. You don’t need to be able to play like a fusion machine to write great stuff. Look at the Beatles. As much as I’m not a big KISS fan, thankfully a guy like Ace or Paul at least knew how to write a good riff and invest some personality in their songs. This stuff is extremelely well played but completely disposable. They aren’t changing anyone’s mood, life or anything with this stuff.

I hope these guys are enjoying what they’re doing, cause nobody else is enjoying it. I agree John G (yet again). How can 3 such talented guys put out such unoriginal material? It’s like they’re lost in their own talents and don’t know how to creatively express them. And seriously, is there a song with Billy Sheehan on bass where they’re isn’t finger tapping? It might have been on cute on Going Crazy, but that was a long time ago and it should be put away like Roth’s spandex outfits. If he can move on, so can you Billy. Please don’t respond to my post with how talented these 3 are, cause I’m not disputing that point, and there is a huge difference between talent and songwriting ability and creativity.

They’re so conservatively ingrained individually and collectively, that they can’t escape sticking to a Mr Big with Portnoy approach. There’s no chance of them having a massive radio smash, so the safe approach is even more befuddling. Take some chances for Christ sake.
