AEROSMITH’S JOE PERRY ON THE BAND’S “AERO-VEDERCI” TOUR, “AT THIS POINT, EVERY SHOW COULD BE THE LAST [ONE]. YOU JUST DON’T KNOW”

Spencer Kaufman of Loudwire spoke with Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry about the band’s forthcoming “farewell” tour.

When asked about their Aero-Vederci Baby tour, the Perry replied:

“The feeling is, right now is gonna be in semi-tour mode for the next few years. We’ll be taking time off here and there, but we really want to play some of the places that we’ve maybe played once before, maybe never before. Kind of go around and hit all the spots you can. We’re much closer to the end than the beginning. I’m not going to say this is – after the U.S. tour that we’ll never play the States again. I’m not going to say that. I feel like, at this point, every show could be the last show. You just don’t know. … I always have this attitude, it’s gotta be as good as it can be that day. That said, we don’t have a day planned where we say ‘Okay, this is the last show.’ You can’t picture that. On the other hand, I know there will be a last show just like there’s a one last time for everything in life.”

He added,”Listen, at my age to have the five guys – the original guys – there are not many bands that can say that. Every time I look across at everybody, I go, ‘Man, I can’t believe it.’ I’ll milk it for everything it’s worth. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?”

Perry also plans to continue touring with the Hollywood Vampires, featuring Alice Cooper and actor Johnny Depp. The band is also discussing the possibility of a 2018 follow-up to their self-titled debut.

ON ITS 30 ANNIVERSARY, THE METAL GOD REFLECTS ON “TURBO” AND DISCUSSES JUDAS PRIEST’S NEW ALBUM

Matt Wardlaw of Ultimate Classic Rock spoke with Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford. Selected quotes from article appear below.

Discussing when the band finished recording, Turbo, 30 years ago, did they know how controversial the album would become?

“In my mind, I can imagine us talking about that, but I think that it was such a slog to make that record, honestly. There were a lot of things going on around that record. For me personally, I was dealing with my substance-abuse demons, and I think we started it in Marbella and then we went to Nassau, and we had to leave Nassau, because we were doing no work at all. We ended up going to Miami, which is even f—ing worse, and then we finally ended up in the Record Plant in L.A. So it was a real slog for me, personally and emotionally. I don’t think we really had much of a chance to think about the consequences of it.”

He continues, “…When you look at everything from Sad Wings of Destiny up to the last release, Redeemer of Souls, Turbo is pushing way ahead of the pack. It seems like the odd man out, although when you play that material now in the set, anything from Turbo, it’s just magic. So wherever we were at 30 years ago, we’re in a different place now, and I think we’re in a place where we feel comfortable and they’re accepted, and we jam those songs and have a good time with them.”

Speaking about how Turbo was originally going to be a double album:

“We were at a place where a lot of bands get when there’s suddenly an incredible outpouring of creativity and material. We had a tremendous amount of songs that we wanted to try and put out together. It was intended at the time to be a Twin Turbo release. Porsche [had their] Twin Turbo, and we were kind of playing around with that idea. We started initially writing the material out in Marbella in Spain. We were there in the winter and we were talking at the time with the label about the idea of all of these extra songs kind of coalescing into a double CD…[but] there was a point where we all agreed that we should just really pull back a bit from putting all of the energy into what would have been a double album and just really focus specifically from song to song to song.”

On what he thinks about Turbo now (30 years later):

“I’m probably a little bit more analytical now than I used to be. Just because it’s interesting to me sonically. It’s interesting to me in terms of the production. It’s interesting to me, listening to my voice. It’s got a lot of characteristics that are unique to that particular record. Sometimes I’m able to put [on our music] and just lose myself, and then there are sometimes when I put it in and I’m just really super-analytical about [it].”

Talking about Priest’s new album:

“[We are] still slaving away in the studio. It’s sounding great. I can’t really say any more than that, because it’s still very nebulous, but it is sounding incredibly exciting and I’m sure we’ll talk about that when the time comes.”

Lead guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal hails formerly from Guns N’ Roses, while bassist John Moyer first rose to fame as a member of Disturbed. Twin brothers Jon Votta (guitar) and Vince Votta (drums), meanwhile, first gained renown as fixtures on the New York music scene. The most recent addition to the group is Grammy Award winner Scott Stapp, the founder and lead singer of Creed. Stapp replaced the late Scott Weiland (of Stone Temple Pilots) as AOA’s lead singer.

AOA evolved organically out of an 18-year friendship between Bumblefoot and the Votta brothers. Jon Votta came to Bumblefoot with the idea of putting together a new band with a diverse group of talent and a uniquely melodic and aggressive sound. The group released their self-titled debut album, Art of Anarchy in June 2015, featuring the late Scott Weiland on vocals. The album showcased a gritty hard rock edge balanced by a powerful focus on innovative songwriting and skillful musicianship. Bumblefoot shines throughout the album not only as band’s co-guitarist (and a world class one at that) but also as the producer and engineer on the album. Jon Votta shares lead responsibilities with Bumblefoot and co-wrote the album with Weiland. Vince Votta brings his powerful rock drumming sensibilities and showmanship, while Moyer brings a punchy bottom end that rounds out the sound of AOA.

The band’s next chapter begins now: The addition of Stapp and the electrifying new musical direction he brings ushers in a new era for the group. “I’m excited to be a part of Art of Anarchy,” said Stapp. “I appreciate collaborating with other talented artists and I can’t wait to share our new music with the fans very soon.”

Bumblefoot adds, “Scott’s style and the personal lyrics he’s been writing are taking the sound in a new direction— one that brings out the best in all of us. It’s a new chapter for us all, and I’m looking forward to sharing the new music with the fans and seeing what the future holds.”

Art Of Anarchy is one of the rare rock bands where each member has a strong identity, and together creates something special. No filler, just raw talent, and dedication to the music and being true to who they are. The members have collectively sold tens of millions of albums worldwide and have a rock pedigree that most artists would be content to rest their laurels on. But while AOA possesses the star power of a rock “super group” in spades, the band’s focus is squarely on songwriting and musical craft.

ROCK ICON ROB HALFORD SAYS THE “THE ’80S, IN AMERICA, [WAS] ONE OF THE GREATEST DECADES FOR OUR KIND OF MUSIC”

As previously reported, Judas Priest will be re-releasing their 1986 record, Turbo, on three CDs (the original album and two bonus discs), as well as 1LP 150g vinyl, on February 3rd.

In an interview with The Rock Brigade, Priest frontman, and Metal God, Rob Halford discussed there record’s experimental sound at the time of its release stating, “Much like everything that we’ve done, we’ve kind of reflected on where we’ve been and what we are trying to aim for next. The big thing about this record is that for the first time in a long time, we were able to take our time.

There was a period in the early ’80s when Priest was literally banging out a record every year and a world tour every year. How did we do that, I don’t know. It was just that we were running on fire, we were having the times of our lives, we had deadlines to meet, we had an incredible thing going with the label.”

He adds, “So here’s the deal. Turbo, the middle of the 1980s, right? We had a little bit of time to kind of pull back and take our time to make this record. So we were in a different place. I mean, I was in a different place, because I had so much coke up my nose, I don’t know how I got through every day of the week, because I was raging at that point, personally.

What I’m trying to say is, America in 1986 and the mid-’80s was… wherever you went, there was incredible things happening in rock and metal. I always kind of reflect as the ’80s, particularly in America, as being one of the greatest decades for our kind of music. So we were wrapped up in all that, we were wrapped up in all that excitement and good times and party-party-party. And I think that we were just… we were making the record. The bulk of the record was made in America. Going down to Whisky, hanging out on the [Sunset] Strip, in Miami… Man, it was an absolute blast. And I think we were just… We were loving that moment, you know. The band was having a great time, and there was a lot of that in the music on ‘Turbo’.”
