KISS’ GENE SIMMONS ON USING ACE AND PETER’S MAKEUP ON OTHER MUSICIANS, “WHY WOULDN’T WE USE THE CLASSIC MAKEUP? WE OWN IT”

Kory Grow of Rolling Stone reports:

For over a decade, KISS’ Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer have both worn makeup associated with the band’s founding guitarist and drummer, respectively. Although the move has sparked some controversy among fans, singer-bassist Gene Simmons tells Rolling Stone it doesn’t bother him.

“Why wouldn’t we use the classic makeup?” he says. “We own it.”

The subject came up during an interview regarding the 40th anniversary of the band’s Destroyer album, when Simmons bemoaned founding guitarist Ace Frehley and drummer Peter Criss’ acrimonious departures from the group within its first decade.

“The saddest thing of all is here we are, top of Mt. Olympus with all this cool stuff happening, really enjoying ourselves, the fans are thrilled, and nobody ever holds up a sign, ‘Where’s Ace and Peter?'” he says. “Anybody that’s in a band goes, ‘Oh, they can’t exist without me.’ They are sadly mistaken. Whether you’re AC/DC or Van Halen or anybody, they can actually not only exist without you. Even if you’re the lead singer, they can actually get twice as big.”

“Even if you’re in Genesis: ‘Oh, they can never do it without Peter Gabriel.’ Oh, sure they can,” he continues. “In fact, we’ll get a guy who doesn’t have any personality and doesn’t put on masks or anything and just sings songs, and they’ll play stadiums. And Peter Gabriel, with all of the great masks and the things, never played that.”

The band had previously encouraged band members who joined in the early Eighties to create new personas – guitarist Vinnie Vincent became the Ankh Warrior and drummer Eric Carr was the Fox – but after the band decided to “unmask” Simmons, the musician says the band decided new personas were not valid. So, when Frehley and Criss departed the band’s reunion tour in 2002 and 2004, respectively, the group – which owns rights to the makeup – bequeathed it unto Thayer and Singer.

“In retrospect, it was the right decision,” Simmons says. “There’s always going to be five percent or 10 percent of people who were there at the beginning who will complain about anything. And listen, I think that’s valid from their point of view. But people get onto a train at different times.

“If you go to see the Stones live today and poke the guy next to you and say, ‘Ron Wood, he’s not Brian Jones,’ the guy says, ‘Who the f–k is that?’ He wouldn’t have a clue what you were talking about. He came into the Stones 10, 20, 30 years after you did.”

Rolling Stone reported in 2014 that Peter Criss relinquished the rights to his character when he left the band. “I’m pissed at myself that my makeup slipped through my hands,” he said. “That’s my cross that I bear.” Frehley said he licensed his and would get it back, though singer-guitarist Paul Stanley called that notion a “fantasy.”

4/5: EDDIE TRUNK PRE GnR MEET & GREET THIS SATURDAY IN VEGAS, MORE.

Back from S FL. Thanks to all the bands and fans I hung with at Rockfest 80’s. The event itself was well run and had a massive production. Most of the bands were really solid. However it was not as nearly well attended as it should have been. Hopefully it’s something that can build in that area. It was cool to be a part of for sure.

I’m under the gun today as it’s my only day home over the course of 3 weeks. So lot of catching up to do. Here’s the rundown of this week:

Tomorrow I fly to Vegas. Spending a few days there and hitting GnR this weekend. If you are going to Vegas I will be doing a meet & greet this Saturday from 4-6PM in the Delano hotel. The Delano is connected to Mandalay Bay. In the lobby of Delano there is a bar called Franklin. That’s where the hang will be before the second Guns show. It is totally free to come to. I will have both of my books for sale if interested. It’s just a chance to hang with some fans and have a drink before heading to the arena. Rock music will be played and it will be a good warm up for the show. Hope to see you this weekend in Vegas and Saturday at Franklin in the Delano 4-6 for a pre show drink!

New podcast this Thursday will feature recent interviews with John 5 and Rob Halford. Free as usual www.podcastone.com and Itunes. Please note PodcastOne is now charging to access my podcast beyond 8 weeks old in the archives. So be sure to download the new ones each week as they post free and listen when you want.

More TBA soon.

4/1: GUNS N’ ROSES MANIA IS UPON US

Guns N’ Roses mania is now in full swing! The club show tonight at The Troubador kicks it all off. Finally all the questions and rumors should be answered. As I’ve said all along I believe the lineup will be the last version of GnR with Slash in for the departed Ashba and Bumble, and of course Duff on bass who subbed for Tommy Stinson toward the end of the last Guns tour. This entire thing has been built around Slash, Duff and Axl. That is the only thing being sold and promised and for most that is plenty good enough. Yes some will grumble about no Izzy (who already said he’s out) and maybe no Adler (not sure but likely out, we will know tonight), but those are the same people that grumble about no Michael Anthony or Bill Ward but still go see Sabbath and VH. I also always would like the original guys, but the fact is every band knows who the key guys that draw and the mainstream knows are. That moves the needle, that rakes in the bucks, and with Guns it’s clearly Slash and Duff.

Now Guns has announced the dates and cities for a US stadium tour. Did anyone really think they would go through all of this and not tour? The way they have done all of this is very smart and kind of old school. Info only as needed, let the world speculate, no interviews, then when any news comes at all it’s a major deal. It’s going to be fun to watch and I think it’s good for rock for sure. I also think they will announce some major support acts for these stadium dates probably soon. Make it even more of an event. But they may wait to see how the dates sell to decide what is needed. I’ve known all the guys in GnR past and present for a long time. Some are good friends. I’m glad they were able to pull this off and wish them luck. Like I said, this is all good for our kind of music. It will be fun to watch and see how it all goes no doubt, and it will also be great to finally put an end to all the non stop speculation and see a show actually happen tonight! See you in Vegas next weekend if you are going..
