4/29: RATT, A7X IN FL, RYCHE, PRIEST, PHILLY, MORE

Jam packed radio show last night! If you missed the interviews they will be On Demand on the SiriusXM app and no doubt online soon. Had Stephen Pearcy and Bobby Blotzer on separately talking about the Ratt situation. It sounds like this is pretty nasty at the moment but also sounds like there could be a possible resolution at some point. Stephen is open to making an album but clearly has issues with Blotzer it seems. Ratt truly was/is a great band that made some great records. Sucks when this stuff happens but we have seen it many times in the music business. From the Ratt perspective all options seem to be on the table so we will see what the next moves are. All I can do is present both sides with equal time and that’s what I did. Everyone can make their decisions from there.

Also thanks to M Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold for checking in. I’m about to leave for FL where I look forward to seeing the band live for the first time tomorrow at Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood along with Hellyeah and Adrenaline Mob. I will be selling and signing my book outside Hard Rock Live tomorrow starting 6PM. No ticket needed to get to me FYI.

Also thanks to Kip Winger for calling in. Winger has a new album out now called Better Days Coming.

I will be back for a live show on Q104.3 NYC this Friday at 11PM ET.

Not a surprise non Geoff Tate version of the band got the rights to the name. This should alleviate any confusion. What I am waiting to see is exactly what Geoff can bill his band as? That has not yet been revealed and has no doubt been decided as part of the long negotiation. Geoff also retains the rights to Mindcrime full performances in his settlement with the band. More to come and I wish both camps well.

New Priest song sounds cool but I refuse to really comments on music unless I have it sent in a proper way. The song was not made available commercially until today and listening to compressed streams on phones and computers is not how I want to asses and crank new music. I look forward to the album and glad the guys are getting ready to do stuff again.

Been listening to the new Tesla album which is out in June. Really great hard rock as usual from these guys. I’ll play it when the band gives me the green light.

Don’t forget coming to the Troc in Philly this Saturday night with Don and Jim for our live show. Both books available for sale at this event as well. Been a bit since I’ve been in Philadelphia, look forward to seeing you all there or in S FL tomorrow night.

4/28: PAUL STANLEY BOOK REVIEW

Had a chance to read Paul Stanley’s book on my many flights lately. I was looking forward to seeing how much Paul would open up in a book like this. In my limited dealings with him over the decades I have found him to be fairly private and very sensitive to anything not in line with the current plan, so his approach to an auto biography would no doubt be interesting. Contrary to what many think, and despite whatever feelings he has about me, Paul was actually always my favorite member of the band. For a long time he was one of my favorite singers and his songs were always what I liked best in Kiss. I agree with his own feelings throughout the book that he has always been the prime driving force in the band. In much of the press he has done leading up to this book he has painted doing this for some greater more legitimate reason than most other rock books. I don’t see any great difference with this than any of the other MANY rock books out there. It is very well written, entertaining, inspiring, and told from his perspective and how he saw it, like ALL of these books are. But I don’t see a great distinction over many other good ones that are out there as Paul has said is the case with his. The one down side is that his is the last of the Kiss members books. The good; that he answers some of the others books, the bad is that many of these stories we have heard already. Especially if you consider we just had the very in depth Nothin’ To Lose as far as Kiss books for history which he was a writer on. But still for any Kiss fan this is a more than worthwhile read. But like ANY book it is his spin and take on the story as he wants to tell it. That is the case with all the books, it’s up to the reader to find the balance from four peoples perspectives when it comes to Kiss. Not surprisingly Paul’s book paints him as the guiding force in the band throughout and rarely does he ever take responsibility for anything that was bad for Kiss. For example he describes the demise of Kiss in the late 70’s to be more about the costumes and stage show than writing a disco song. I can tell you even though it was a hit, I Was Made For Loving You was DEATH to the Kiss fan base at the time and some still haven’t recovered from it. The shots at Ace and even more so Peter are expected, but more surprising are the shots at Gene and how bad their relationship was at some stages. Almost every bad decision was because of someone else it seems at times. Some other interesting things:

*No acknowledgment of what a big song “Shock Me” was for Ace and the Love Gun LP, or the success of Ace’s solo album over the others with “NY Groove”.

*Not much made of the impact “Beth” had crossing the band to an entire new audience. A huge moment in the bands history to get on the radio.

*Glosses over some of the later 80’s albums. Almost no mention of Crazy Nights and recording with noted producer Ron Nevison. Would have loved more back story on the making of the 80’s and 90’s albums.

*Talks about the many bad songs Gene mailed in during the 80’s but outside of the two on Smashes Thrashes (which were bad and he does say so!) never mentions his role in some duds as well. Bang Bang You? Read My Body? Although his material was mostly better he had some clunkers for sure along the way.

*Good to see how he admits not handling the passing of Eric Carr within the band the right way. How the band didn’t stop while Eric attempted to recover is hard to believe. It did bother Eric Carr greatly that while he was fighting cancer his band was already recording with Eric Singer, who he predicted would replace him. Def Leppard stood by their drummer when he lost an arm, Kiss could have waited to see how Carr would do. He does take this on and take responsibility and it was good to see finally.

*Didn’t acknowledge that fans at the MTV unplugged in ’95 actually booed when current band was re introduced and chanted for a reunion at the end of the taping. I was in the audience. It was an avalanche that resulted in the reunion in ’96.

*Psycho Circus very glossed over. Who plays on it? Why were they not able to make a deal with Peter and Ace? Also no mention of performing with the symphony in Australia. Not my favorite thing in KISStory by any stretch but should have had a mention.

All that said I truly enjoyed the book and would suggest it to any Kiss fan. But like ALL Kiss books it is HIS version of how he saw things. I’m not about to go tit for tat with all four books and who’s told the story best and most accurate. They ALL are coming from that persons point of view and get that persons story out as they saw it. And something tells me there will be no shortage of more Kiss related books to come…

4/27: BACK FROM GOLDEN GODS & M3. A7X IN FL NEXT THIS WED, PHILLY SAT, RATT.

Been going non stop on the road last 6 weeks. Just home from M3. Another great year of many killer 80’s bands. Like most festivals I don’t get to see all the bands. Some I only see a song or two. These are working events for me and I get pulled in many directions, but that’s why I’m there. Was an honor to host again and of the bands I did see all truly sounded good. Night Ranger continues to be a killer dual guitar live band. Tesla sounded great and played a new song called MP3. They remain one of my all time favorite bands from the 80’s and are still one of the very best. Also saw some of Winger, Queensryche, Red Dragon Cartel, LA Guns and Kix. The highlight for me was seeing Extreme, simply because they had not played a proper US live show for five years. The band was incredible and Nuno is as brilliant as ever. Amazing to watch this guy play and see how strong the entire band is playing and vocal wise, awesome! Look forward to seeing them again at Rocklahoma. Most of the other bands that played I simply didn’t see because of other commitments on site. M3 will be back in 2015. Thanks to all the great fans I met and to those that sold out my books at my signings. If you didn’t get one you can order signed personalized copies on this site.

Also had a great time hosting the Golden Gods in LA. This show airs on VH1C May 24th at 8PM ET. I’ve seen many comments about the sound quality of some of the acts. Very hard to judge from a stream or bootleg video. What I heard on stage was strong from most. Let’s hear what the TV mix sounds like when it airs. I am also aware of the Jani Lane error in the memorial segment. I did not have anything to do with the production of this show. Was simply one of the hosts. So I can not speak for what happened there. There were also some curious decisions on who won some awards. But again, I have no control over that at all and do not run this or have any influence. It was a fun night and a star studded turn out for sure, but lets be honest, any awards is really just a huge party for the most part. And I can tell you this was a party backstage before and after!

I broke the news about Stephen Pearcy leaving Ratt Thursday when he texted me his statement on the way to LAX airport. Both the Ratt camp and Stephen have reached out to me to come on the radio and discuss and I will let both do that when the opportunity comes up in my schedule. It’s unfortunate this has happened as I have always said Ratt was and still is a great band. We will see what the next events are soon..

So much more to tell you but want to spend a bit of time with my kids before hitting the road yet again. I’ll be live on SiriusXM 39 tomorrow 6-10P ET. M Shadows will call in live. I’ll be hosting Avenged Sevenfold, Hellyeah, Adrenaline Mob at Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood FL this Wed! My book signing/selling starts at 6 outside the venue entrance. Me, Don and Jim will be live on stage this Saturday at The Troc in Philly. Again these are NOT TMS tapings but live stand up shows. Hope to see you there. Books for sale then as well.

Much more to come when I get time. Follow on Twitter @EddieTrunk

Happy birthday ACE FREHLEY!

4/24: RECAP OF LAST NIGHTS GOLDEN GODS AWARDS IN LA, MORE.

What a total blast hosting the Golden Gods was last night here in LA! You will see it on VH1C starting May 24th at 8P ET. SO many people i saw and met would be impossible to cover here. Next up I fly to MD today and host M3 there this Friday and Saturday. Can’t wait to see everyone this weekend. Remember my book signings will be 3 and 6P Saturday at the Chuck Levins Washington Music Center booth. Both books signed and for sale at Chuck Levins booth only. I’ll be tweeting a bunch more photos from Golden Gods @eddietrunk but here are a few highlights / stories from last night:

*Marilyn Manson kicking off the show with a surprise performance by Slayer, who also played a new song.

*Seeing Manson choke (jokingly) a clearly out of his mind Andy Dick, then seeing Andy being thrown out minutes later.

*Spending a long time talking with Richie Sambora about Bon Jovi, NJ and more. Don’t know him personally but we had a great chat about Jersey club bands back in the day and what he is doing now with Orianthi who I also met. I think Bon Jovi without him is crazy but he seemed happy with the reduced schedule and touring that comes with a mega band like that.

^Hanging with Nic Cage who’s son is a TMS/metal fan. I know Nic’s brother Marc Coppola who I work with at Q104.

*Meeting actor Joe Manganiello from True Blood who told me he was a fan of mine! So cool to meet people like actors and discover they are metal fans and aware of what I do. Same with Pauly Perrette from NCIS who was a big fan as well.

*Speaking with Tony Iommi who looked great and said he feels great. Tony accepted the award for Sabbath and it was great to see him and catch up for a bit.

*Said hi briefly to Axl Rose. Axl accepted his award from Nic Cage and then did an 8 song set with Gnr. Duff McKagan played the whole show and it was AWESOME to see him rocking those songs side by side with Axl again! Tommy Stinson will be returning soon but I’m glad I got to see Duff with them. Sounded great as did Axl’s voice which was very strong. Axl thanked all the GnR lineups in his brief speech.

*Hanging with Zakk Wylde and Ace Frehley who presented an award together. Two HYSTERICAL people. They should start a comedy show together.

*Cool to see so much love for Joan Jett at a metal awards and deserving. Joan is having a big run lately coming off of Nirvana, etc.

Tons more I am forgetting. I’ll discuss on radio Monday when back live. Gotta fly to MD soon, more when I can and see you all at M3 if going! Was an honor to host the Golden Gods for the first time with Don & Jim and thanks to Revolver for having us.

4/22: GREETINGS FROM LA AND THE GOLDEN GODS AWARDS.

Greetings from Los Angeles. Here for a couple more days to host the Golden Gods Awards with Don & Jim tomorrow. Just came from rehearsal at Club Nokia. Should be a great night tomorrow with many stars from rock music as well as TV and movies in attendance. Looks like Nick Cage is giving Axl Rose his award tomorrow and Duff McKagan is going to play once again witb GnR. Duff is not fully in Guns, just filling in while Tommy Stinson performs with The Replacements. Should be cool to see Duff on stage with Guns once again though. They are going to play up to as many as eight songs tomorrow night I’m told.  Zakk Wylde and Joan Jett are among the other performers scheduled. Tons of artists attending and giving or getting awards. Me, Don and Jim will host and also do some backstage interviews that will be seen during the TV telecast. Many have asked me how this can all be seen? It will be streamed live tomorrow as it happens on www.vh1classic.com starting at 8PM Pacific/11 ET (pre show 1 hour before). Then an edited version of the event will air on VH1C May 24th at 8PM ET. I’m sure many repeat airings after that on both VH1C and Palladia. I’ll keep you guys posted best I can via my Twitter as the night unfolds @EddieTrunk I’ve attended this show several times since it happened but this is my first time as a host for it and it should be a blast and hopefully a great celebration of hard rock and metal! More soon.
