3/2: TMS RECAP, MICK MARS, NEW KISS HOF INFO.

Hope you guys all enjoyed the all new That Metal Show last night. It’s been great to be able to feature such a wide variety of rock, hard rock and metal in the shows evolution. Guys like Mick Jones and Leslie West have so much history it’s hard to even scratch the surface on TV with the time we have. Was cool seeing Marty Friedman geek out over Mick Jones “Hot Blooded” solo! Huge thanks to Leslie West for the amazing guitar. Had no idea that was coming! One day I MUST learn to play! Was also cool to have Lita jam. She is a big part of our shows history as the first ever guest, and now the first ever woman to perform for us. I did talk with Leslie about the loss of his leg and I did talk with Mick about Lou Gramm and the recent performance at the songwriters HOF but it was cut for time. Some will likely end up as online extras. I’ll post links when I can or visit www.thatmetalshow.vh1.com for more. Show replays all week. Next taping is this Tuesday in NYC with Mick Mars! So cool to have the unsung hero of Motley on our show for the hour. Truly underrated player too! Mick will also be in studio with me tomorrow for a LIVE TRUNKNation 6-10P ET on SiriusXM channel 39. Don’t miss it! More soon.

Quick update on the Kiss R&R HOF drama. My sources telling me that as of now, unless Gene and Paul change their mind and decide to play with the original band, there will be no performance of any kind for the bands induction. Common thought was that perhaps an all star band would be assembled to tribute Kiss since there is no performance from them now with any version of the band. But there will be no tribute either. Likely just a video package on the screens. So where we stand now is no performance at all of any kind related to Kiss, or the original band does a song or two in or out of makeup. And we all no as of now that ain’t happening. Still time for things to change but very reliable sources telling me that’s the HOF position as of now. Also each of the four original members get 3 minutes each for their speeches during the induction and only those inducted are at the podium for those speeches.

The question is now, do they all show to accept? You know Gene and Paul have to show… or they risk letting Ace and Peter represent KISS and that won’t happen. Plus, with the massive egos on Gene and Paul, they wouldn’t miss a night in the spotlight for anything. You almost wonder if the HOF purposely loaded this show with big acts just in case KISS pulled something like this. The HOF show still has Nirvana, Gabriel and others to round out a show even without a KISS performance.

Boy Eddie, I love Ace Frehley and I think it’s time for him to just move on and stop talking about KISS altogether. KISS has once again become such a joke. I would rather talk or hear about a new album from Ace. The KISS I loved will never bee again and that is fine because the records are there. I am getting so sick and tired of hearing about this! Everyone knows what Ace & Peter did, and, KISS never would have happened had it not been for Sean Delaney & Bill Aucoin and the many people who put their effort into KISS without any accolades. KISS could not have gone on at the time with A&P but they could have stopped re-grouped got sober and then continued but that didn’t happen. Ace needs to get his ass in gear and release his record while all of this hype and free publicity is there for the taking. The HOF is a business, not a legit honor or otherwise Deep Purple would have been in a longtime ago. KISS is going to go down as the worst inductee ever and that is sad in itself. I really believe that this is the end of any original band member thing, I am sure they have all four new members waiting in the wings for after 40 years.

    • Eddie on

You can’t say Ace shouldn’t talk about Kiss when he is a founding member and it IS the story right now because of the HOF. Beyond that he is doing a new album. But you can’t just ignore this major event he is part of

    • sonny from da bronx on

lets face it kiss stopped being a band after the alive album it was gene and pauls band. after the alive album peter and ace became junkies and didnt want to be in the band anymore the producers had to use session musicians because peter and ace didnt either show up or couldnt play good enough they didnt want to be there they didnt play on alot of the songs after dressed to kill album so gene and paul has the right to do what they want they made the band successful but i still love ace and peter

    • shannon patrick mehaffey on

That’s not true..Peter and Ace were very much a part of their records after Alive! You have manipulated the stats to conform to your argument..the truth is session guys account for a small percentage. Peter drums on every Kiss up until Dynasty.

    • Mike Tyler on

I get really tired of hearing the whole “Peter & Ace didn’t play on any of the songs after Dressed to Kill” shit. First of all, they played on all of Destroyer with the exception of the guitar solo on “Sweet Pain” which was played by Dick Wagner, he also played the acoustic guitar on “Beth”. Second, this doesn’t happen again except on the 4th side of ALIVE II which has the 5 studio tracks and Bob Kulick playes the solo work on all of them except “Rocket Ride” in which Ace plays all guitars & bass on that one. Then came Dynasty in which after pre-production and rehearsals were completed, Vini Poncia (who had produced Peter Criss’ solo album), decided that Criss’ drumming was substandard, an opinion shared by Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. Criss by this time was hindered by injuries suffered to his hands in a 1978 car accident. Kiss hired South African-born studio drummer Anton Fig, who played on Ace’s solo album, to play on the Dynasty sessions. With the exception of his song, “Dirty Livin'”, Criss does not appear on the album, and he would not perform on another Kiss album until 1998’s Psycho Circus, on which he would only play one song as well. Fig was again hired to replace Criss during recording sessions for the following album Unmasked. Eric Carr was hired as Criss’ permanent replacement before the tour for the album began. Gene doesn’t play bass on SEVERAL tracks on this album. Paul plays, rhythm guitar (bass guitar on “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” and “Magic Touch”, lead guitar on “Sure Know Something”) and Ace plays, lead guitar (all guitars on “2,000 Man”, bass guitar on “2,000 Man”, “Hard Times” and “Save Your Love”) Now that’s 4 songs Gene doesn’t play on, that’s half the album! He also doesn’t play bass on at least 5 tracks on Unmasked! Paul plays bass guitar on “Tomorrow” and “Easy As It Seems” Frehley plays – lead guitar, & bass guitar on “Talk to Me”, “Two Sides of the Coin” and “Torpedo Girl”. Paul also does all the leads on on “Is That You?”, “What Makes the World Go ‘Round”, “Tomorrow” and “Easy As It Seems” &, all guitars on “Shandi”. By this point in time, you are correct, they were no longer a band, they were pretty much playing all the instruments on their own songs. Plus there is a SHITLOAD of songs that Gene didn’t play a note on during the 80’s. Specifically from Animalize & Asylum. My whole point with this is I get tired of hearing Gene just CONSTANTLY bashing Ace when he has been guilty of doing the same fucking thing! Maybe gene wasn’t out getting fucked up, but he had put KISS on the back burner while he was making movies & trying to be a music mogul & also sticking his dick into whatever snatch he could find. Which is fine, he can do whatever he wants, but enough of the hypocrisy. Stanley & Simmons want to rip on Peter & Ace for their drug abuse & yet turned a blind eye on Bob Ezrin imbibing huge amounts of cocaine! Who do you think introduced coke to those guys in the first fuckin’ place? Don’t get me wrong, I love Gene & Paul, but they’re not perfect either.

    • ACE on

Dude, what planet are you on? Your statement is almost entirely false. I don’t know where to begin here, but bottom line is, you don’t know what you are talking about.

    • jaron benson on

Wrong…… when the music from the elder was recorded ace was shut down at every pass with no equality as Paul would always side with gene. Its understandable that one you have been proven to be of unequal stature in a band you co-founded it is best to cultivate other options. Ace did around the time of the creatures of the night album. Ace did not play on that album vinnie Vincent did and was not and still today is not given the appropriate credit for his contributions to the band!!! I love kiss but I gotta say that I have been listening to Frehley’s comet a little more as of recent!!!

  • Rich on

    Eddie,

Why does Kissonline.com (Gene or Paul) say they didn’t refuse to play with Peter and Ace when as of now there is no performance planned with Ace and Peter. We know from your blogs and recent comments from Ace and Peter that they are clearly disappointed for being denied that opportunity. Both have expressed wanting to play with Paul and Gene at the HOF. If they haven’t refused, then they should play with Ace and Peter given that they want to. If that won’t happen, it makes Gene and Paul appear to not being honest unless they assume most fans would think that Ace and Peter’s comments are not credible. What’s up with polar opposite comments coming from both camps?

    • Eddie on

It is more than clear on every level Gene and Paul will not play with Ace and Peter at this point. That is what led to all of this. That is essentially what they have said in their follow up interviews; “we feel the memory would not be well served”. Or something like that. If they change their mind and decide they want to then everything changes.

    • Chris Medek on

So was there an offer made by Gene,Paul and Ace,Peter declined for whatever reasons?

    • Eddie on

NO, the entire point here is that Gene and Paul will not play with Ace and Peter at this. The original four only are not being allowed to play when it is the original four being inducted. G&P do not want to do it.

    • Chris Medek on

OK , I understand that’s where we are at now. Reading Gen,Paul’s statement All members were to be included in the performance part. Now if Ace ,Peter didn’t want to perform with Eric,Tommy or Bruce that would be on them.If no agreement was reached you can see why Paul when asked to play with Ace,Peter “seems unlikely”. Then you have Ace claiming he wouldn’t perform with Tommy in make-up. That’s Ace’s decision but Gene ,Paul aren’t about to let former members decide who performs in make-up they own the rights too.Now KISS plays their high card; induct all or no performance. The HOF plays their card: originals or no performance. So the common ground is no performance? I imagine we will hear what was planned taking what could have been a KISSAPOLOOSA into a TV appearance.I am at a loss why rules other bands have modified are not even considered for KISS.Bands have performed in their current line-ups discarding the original members and the HOF allowed them.

    • Chris Medek on

Gee and those forced re-unions worked so well for CCR,Van Halen,Gun & Roses,Blondie…

    • Rich on

I understand there will be no performance Eddie, but I was looking for your opinion and some additional insight as to why Kiss said in their original statement regarding the HOF that they did not refuse to play with Ace and Peter. There’s a contradiction between that and the original statements from Ace and Peter. It wasn’t in a follow up interview that they made the point you quoted about the memory not being served. They made both points in in the same paragraph as part of their initial statement about there being no performance at all:

“It is over 13 years since the original lineup has played together in make-up and we believe the memory of those times would not be enhanced. Contrary to claims made through the media we have never refused to play with Ace and Peter.”

    • Eddie on

I think they are trying to deflect some of the negative heat to be honest with you.. Not the first time in their history there has been some “misinformation”

    • robyn on

Eddie will you please clarify what is going on. what I understood was that gene would play if it was all the members of Kiss because he felt that all the members still living should be part of kiss for what it is not just the original 4. then ace and peter did not want to play and said that gene and paul was refusing to play with them, and that the hall of fame says it had to be the original 4 or no kiss at all. I do respect that ace and peter did found and started kiss and I do respect and like ace on his own, I can also understand that with the drugs, no shows and personality issues that band could not go on like it was. we genes story and we have aces story and honestly somewhere in the middle is the truth. I love kiss and grew up on them. they was one of my first concerts and my first real big out of this world stage concert shows. honestly I can respect genes choice that all of kiss should play or none because of the fact it was been so many years that both ace and peter has been out and kiss has rocked on that all the members should play now for making kiss what it is today. if they had been put in 25 years ago I would say other wise, that at that time it should have been gene, paul, ace and peter. but with all these miles sense then it really is not the same group and all the members past and present have played a part in who and what they are today. please post the real story of what is going on because with everyones verison I am lost to what really happened now

  • Eric Carroll on

Absolutely ridiculous, it is supposed to be a time of celebration yet it is turning into a disaster. I hate it when bands go in different directions and try to act like original lineups never existed or wasn’t as big a impact as we all know it actually was. Anywho your the man Eddie, I love your courage to speak out and tell them like you see it whether it blows your chance of them coming on TMS or not lol. Rock on brother!

  • brian faust on

The halls a joke anyway how did some of these bands get in and deep purple, dio and otherswho deserve to are not categorize them better might bea good idea

  • Craig on

The latest TMS sucked. Leslie West???? I challenge anyone to name TWO Mountain songs off the top of their head. You can’t. Overrated one hit wonder. Why he was on the show was mind boggling. He added nothing. Would much rather watch Jennifer strut around for an hour than watch that crapola again. And Lita Ford? Another one trick pony. Just brutal.

    • Eddie on

Too bad you have no clue on rock history. I mean the guy only played with Hendrix and has people like Zakk Wylde, Eddie VH, Satriani, Tremonti, Randy Rhoades and MANY more HE influenced. He only played on a tribute Ozzy did to him. Nope, no connection at all.. Too bad you can’t respect the history and are only concerned with “hits”…

    • gary on

well said Eddie , Leslie West IS one of the founding fathers of AMERICAN HEAVY METAL !!!!!!!! Lita Ford is an icon for women in heavy metal today !!!!!!!!! I’ll name 5 MOUNTAIN songs craig ….. Blood Of The Sun , Never In My Life , Flowers Of Evil , Don’t Look Around , You Better Believe It , there you go 1 song from each record from 69-75 ……… HATER !!!!!!!!!!

    • Ursula on

Good one Gary, that guy Graig unfortunately doesn’t have a clue! Probably in diapers @ the time & missed the greatest era in rock & metal history, poor guy!

    • Scott Leavell on

If you’ve never heard the EPIC Nantucket Sleighride, Theme From An Imaginary Western, Don’t Look Around, etc. etc. I feel sorry for you. West has one of the richest tones in all of Guitardom. I hear West’s influence in countless players, not the least of which is the virtuoso Warren Haynes. Seriously – go check out the massive version of “Stormy Monday” (on the Atlanta Pop/Isle of Wight LP) and tell me that it doesn’t rock and jam your face off. Eddie – THANK YOU for getting Leslie to the show.

    • Patrick on

      Mountain Songs off the top of my head;

      Never in My lIfe
      Nantucket Sleighride
      Long Red
      Don’t Look Around
The Animal Trainer and The Toad
      Theme From An Imaginary Western
      Mississippi Queen

      your turn, Craig

    • nh on

Um Nantucket sleigh ride? Theme? …Mississippi? Craig is a moron or just wants to start shit. Nantucket on the live album twin peaks really showcases the talent and genius of West.

    • Greg Lentz on

Just because you don’t know anything about Mountain doesn’t mean nobody else does. I thought it was an amazing episode considering that it wasn’t metal at all and just goes to show how underrated Leslie West is by everybody who never knew anything of Mountain other than Mississippi Queen. So many guys that would have been bigger (unintentional pun) if not for drugs.

Frankly, I wasn’t expecting much from the Lamb of God episode until I heard them eloquently tell their story. Their music still doesn’t do it for me, but I’m better for having heard that episode.
