3/16: TMS RECAP & UPDATE, KISS/DEF LEP, SOUNDGARDEN/NIN, MORE

Thanks to all who watched this weeks new That Metal Show last night. The show will repeat all week as usual on VH1 Classic. Dee is always a great guest. Always outspoken and never one to pull punches, which makes for great guests always in my opinion, regardless if you agree or disagree. At 59 he remains an incredibly strong singer and frontman and TS is an example of a band that has benefited greatly from not over touring. Ever since they first reunited for my NY Steel 9/11 benefit in 2001 they have only played an average of 10 shows a year, making it more special to see them, making them more money per show, and giving them higher billing than a band of their status would usually have on a festival. Interesting look at another approach compared to the many bands that tour constantly and also have members with many side bands. I am not judging either way, everyone needs to pay the bills, just interesting approach. Was also great to have Chris Caffery on. I am often asked about Savatage by radio listeners. The simple truth is TSO is way too big for the guys to focus on Savatage these days. But they do give a nod to that band often in the TSO shows. Chris played his Ace Frehley model Les Paul (Ace’s face on the head) and sounded great. Also nice to have Glenn Hughes check in. Stunning how great Glenn still sounds now in his mid 60’s! His new band California Breed and their debut album is an early contender for album of 2014 for me. It’s out in May.

This Tuesday we tape this Saturday’s new episode. Peter Criss will join us on set! Peter has not been on with us since the very early half hour days of TMS. Needless to say much to cover with him and we will do the full hour with the Catman. Ace Frehley may or may not join us for this show via Skype. Ace is in the middle of deadlines to finish his new album on the W Coast and likely won’t be able to get to NYC for our taping. But we hope to include him via Skype if our schedules match up. Either way should be a great show and our guest musician on drums with be Richard Christy. Most know Richard from the Howard Stern show but he is also a killer drummer who has played in several bands. 3 more new shows to come in our current new season of TMS. Final two episodes will feature Joe Satriani, Vinnie Paul, The Winery Dogs, Volbeat, Artie Lange and Jim Breuer. This has been our most diverse guest season yet and thank you all for the amazing response! Once we tape our last two shows 3/25 I’ll be hitting the road extensively, so please see the home page with my appearances and events and come say hello. More to be added!

The Kiss/Def Leppard tour officially announced tomorrow. Looks like Soundgarden & NIN are also teaming up. As discussed in the last Trunk Report bands co-headlining is becoming a huge trend more than ever to compete for the concert dollar and justify what are becoming very expensive events even beyond the cost of the tickets. It is far and few now of rock bands that can actually truly headline shows in the US with no name support playing large venues. Pearl Jam, Bon Jovi, U2, Stones, McCartney, VH, Rush, AC/DC ones that come to mind. I get the co-headline is needed for business, but it does hurt in that young bands no longer have these chances for exposure. I know some bills put an unknown on 3rd billed, but the truth is these acts sometimes go on before 7P and off by 7:30 and few actually are in to see them. SO much great new music out there these days and it’s just another reason it is getting harder to expose.

Live on SiriusXM 39 TRUNKNation tomorrow 6-10P ET on channel 39. Join me for live music and talk that rocks!

How does it work for the Hell and Heaven thing in Mexico, did you/bands still get paid? All those airline tickets wasted. Was it the government being jerks at the last minute or just not planned well?

    • Eddie on

I don’t know how it works. I only know my end. Some bands were paid in full and they also had to buy their air. Every deal different

I live in Mx, we all agree here that it was a political thing. District whete it was going to be held is ruled by a left wing party, state where district is, run by official presidential party PRI ( right wing, quite corrupt) Theres also a monopoly when it comes to promoters, Ocesa is the entertainmet Co. That brings 90% of big name acts, this hurt their interests and did everything to block the event. Sad but true.

    Paul Simon / Sting
    Rod Stewart / Santana
    Lionel Richie / CeeLo Green
KISS / Def Leppard (with Night Ranger)
    Motley Crue / Alice Cooper
    Boston / Doobie Brothers

These are just some of the 2014 co-headlining summer tours. It’s been a trend in the business for at least 5-10 years now and as a fan, I love value for money. If newer groups want to be up there with the big boys, maybe they should start writing better songs!

Songwriting is a lost art – you nailed it! Especially in hard rock/metal. Sometimes in the late 1980s it became about the guitar solo. The tail started wagging the dog and for some reason next to none of those bands can fill much more than a club these days.

Also Ken, Journey & Steve Miller, Foreigner/Styx/Don Felder, Boston & Cheap Trick, Peter Frampton & Doobies, Chicago & REO Speedwagon…

That’s just crazy. There are some great bands that put out great albums about every other year or so. They also put on great live shows. Godsmack, Alice in Chains, and Foo Fighters will kick the butts of every band in your list. I personally love Sting and Paul Simon, but I a not going to spend $200 to see guys that are as old as my dad. Another great album, Avenge Sevenfold’s newest albums is just smoking. Listen to satellite radio or Pandora and you might hear something released in the last 10 years. As in life, music changes…change with it. I have seen many of the groups you have listed. Give me Rush any day and some of who I listed, I’ll I ask is give me my moneys worth. Play for 2 plus hours please!!!! Then I don’t mind paying $125 or more per seat. Keep Rocking!

Hey Eddie I ‘m in The Columbus ,Ohio area . 1. will you be the area for book signings 2. back in the mid 70’s early 80’s ., in the Columbus area we had a couple bands wonder you heard of them The Godz and ROSIE . Mark Chatfield played guitar in both and with Bob Seager. If you never heard those bands check them out they rocked and should have been big in my opion …….. keep up the good work on TMS

First, I am in love with TMS. Been watching since the beginning, always DVR to watch over and over again.

    Two quick comments/ suggestions:

1/ How about inviting some producers on the show? Would love to hear some stories from the likes of Ted Templeman, Bob Rock, etc.

2/ I noticed whenever there is a Christian metalhead on the show (Cooper, Sweet, Ellefson), there is never talk of their beliefs. It’s almost like there’s that proverbial elephant in the room. It could make for a great subject.

3/ Speaking of Christians in metal, there is a guitar player by the name of Rex Carrol who plays for the band Whitecross — a Christian metal band from the 80’s that still gets around. Guy is a virtuoso. Would love to see him sit in as a guest musician. (There are several videos of him on YouTube).

    Thanks,
    Mel aka Riroon

P.S. As always, keep up the excellent work!

VH1 wants names the public knows. Many do not know producers but I have them on my radio shows.
We never talk religion regardless of the beliefs. Way too much to cover in artists career, they all have new stuff they want to plug, TV time is limited. Thanks

    • Jim on

Nobody wants to hear all the religious talk, I for one would fast forward it or not watch at all. it’s about the music, not politics or any personal social crap. I’m glad Nugent kept it about music and did not go on one of his self important speeches…ugh! I would like to see some bands play though, and new bands like Rival Sons or Sasquatch.

    • David C on

Christian meathead? What a stupid comment…shows your ignorance.

    • David C on

Disregard my comment and my apologies…I misread your comment. Sorry.

  • Norm Bouthillier on

Hey Eddie…here’s one for your top 5 board top 5 songs w/ the words rock in them….could be fun for you three to debate that on a TMS

    • Eddie on

      Thanks

    • Andy Gotsch on

Here are a couple other ideas for the Top 5 Board that I think would be great:
      1. Top 5 Back-To-Back albums (i.e. Highway to Hell & Back in Black, Creatures of the Night & Lick It Up)
      2. First 5 Bands you would put in your fictional newly created Hard Rock/Metal Hall of Fame.

It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock and roll!
