2/9: THE GRAMMY’S, MOTOR SISTER, ALICE COOPER, MORE

Lot’s of reaction about The Grammy’s who I have consistently hammered about their utter consistent cluelessness when it comes to rock and metal. The nominations seem random at best and the winners can be even more head scratching. Because they have destroyed any real level of credibility when an artist that is actually deserving wins it does nothing for their career and has no real impact. It is sad that another mainstream music institution is so lost when it comes to rock and metal and has been for over 20 years. And there are no signs of anything changing with the laughable decision to give Tenacious D a Grammy for best Metal performance last night for a Dio cover. Now don’t get me wrong, I love Dio as you know and love the album this song came from and the cause it was put out for. But is a metal comedy act really the best metal performance over nominees like Motorhead (who once won one for a Metallica cover!), Mastodon, Slipknot (a #1 album!) and Anthrax (again nominated for a cover!). I mean you just couldn’t make it up! I have nothing against Tenacious D but even they have to be thinking “what the fuck?”. Outside of that AC/DC were great and it looks like Chris Slade has the gig on drums. That was about all there was to discuss rock wise from the show. Oh and it was very cool to see Nuno Bettencourt playing with Paul McCartney! Nuno is having some year reuniting Extreme, still working with Rhianna, recently touring with Steven Tyler, etc. Incredible stuff for a great talent and congrats to him.

Live on SiriusXM channel 39 tonight 6-10P ET. Scott Ian, Pearl and Jim Wilson from Mother Superior in studio and Alice Cooper calls in. See you tonight for TRUNKNation!

Next Eddie, Jim, Don live shows 1/20 at Starland NJ, and 1/21 Rex theater Pittsburgh. TONS of new shows for me added, please see the home page and come on out if you can.

You know what’s funny? Tull is actually one of the most influential bands in history. From the Eagles, to Metallica to Maiden, you listen to their very early 70s records and you hear ideas all over the place that turned up in other bands’ music.
Back to the Grammys: I like Beck, he’s a talented guy. That dip stick who won for plagiarizing Tom Petty and Jack Black however, is an insult to anyone who takes music seriously. The whole show is an insult. Kanye should just be banned from any future awards show. What’s weird is that with the declining profile of music in general, the show has become more important to the music business , while at the same time becoming so obviously irrelevant, the punch lines getting worse and worse.

I would like to give a shout out to Paul Stanley who elegantly posted on his Facebook page that “Beck should’ve kicked ‪#‎Kanye‬ right in the nuts last night and said Get the f–k off MY stage! The GRAMMYs ‪#‎grammys‬.”

Also, another holla to the amazing Shirley Manson of Garbage, who wrote via her Facebook page, “..You make yourself look small and petty and spoilt. In attempting to reduce the importance of one great talent over another, you make a mockery of all musicians and music from every genre, including your own. Grow up and stop throwing your toys around. You are making yourself look like a complete twat.”

      D 🙂

Kanye should just do his own awards show. And what’s his beef with Beck and Taylor Swift? They at least have musical talent. If he would’ve gone up there when Jack Black got his award I wouldn’t have had a problem with that.

Yeah his own award show and he could wear his Aquaman suit

Or that guy who gets a Grammy for changing the lyrics to “I Won’t Back Down” by Tom Petty…where was Kanye then?

was that the real paul Stanley?

    • Dana on

      LOL Elliot,

Yes, it was the real Paul Stanley. The original one, not the one from this site. Although, that would have been hysterical had it been the one from here.

      D 🙂

Hey Dana, I’ll second that shout out to Paul Stanley, it’s about time somebody spoke up, and spoke out against that idiot West! Rock on Paul! 😉

Another dumb move on the Grammys part was the year the nominees for best metal performance were Anthrax Persistence Of Time, Judas Priest Painkiller, Megadeth Rust In Peace, Suicidal Tendencies Lights Camera Revolution and the Grammy genius’ gave the award to Metallica for a horribly produced cover of a Queen song. The thought everyone had was since there was so much outrage over Jethro Tull winning over Metallica for the first ever metal Grammy that they gave Metallica the award over Anthrax, Megadeth (who should have been the winner), Suicidal Tendencies and Judas Priest to appease everyone that was pissed. That move, in turn, pissed me off because in this case Metallica didn’t deserve to win over any of those other bands, who were all rightfully nominated for brilliant albums. So it just proves that the goons in charge of the Grammys have been clueless about metal since they first started giving out a metal award.

I missed ACDC, apparently the highlight of the show. I liked Jeff Lyne- John Mayer is a damned good guitarist. Glad that Johnny Winter was finally acknowledged (now that he’s dead). I try not to be a musical elitist, I mean talent is talent, but there is no excuse for not finding content area experts if you are going to give out awards for different musical genres. I wonder if bluegrass and classical and jazz fans are similarly pissed.

Here is the irony some of you may be missing; Metallica lost out to Jethro Tull, a band known for using the flute. On this Tenacious D cover of Last in Line, a flute or other woodwind type instrument was used during the solo section. Coincidence?

it would make more sense for spinal tap to get a lifetime achievement award than tenacious d getting best metal performance.
